GARMIN 96C REVIEW by Dave Prossor

Dave Prossor is a Grade 1 Flight Instructor who also writes two columns is Australian Aviation magazine. Dave doubles as an on-demand ferry pilot on S/E aircraft, domestic. He recently gave the Garmin 96C that he purchased from us a test flight. Here is his report;

I have been using a Garmin 90 GPS for the last ten years. It has been a good unit but recently I opted to upgrade to a Garmin 96C from Calculator and Handheld Systems and Services and see how it went while on the ferry of a Cessna 172 from Melbourne to Mt. Isa.

I chose the 96C because it is compact, has a colour screen, the price was right and I expected correctly that it would operate along much the same lines as my previous Garmin 90. It also has additional features that I like.

The 96C is the same size as the 90 mono unit and as such fits easily into my flight bag. On the moving map Prohibited, Restricted and Danger areas (PRD) as well as CTA boundaries are displayed. It came with a cradle holder that attaches to the control column of whatever aircraft I am flying. The 96C slips easily into the holder and as such is nicely in front of the pilot. The 96C uses only two AA batteries for a said life of up to 40 hours running time (the 90 used four for a shorter life). The 96C can have a power cable plugged into the ciggy lighter for aircraft power and if that is lost or not available the batteries (if installed) then take over. It can have an external windscreen mounted aerial but I found that the unit quickly pulled in up to 12 satellites using the in-built aerial while just mounted in the holder.

The display I chose was the moving map display with the ground speed and miles to run displayed at the top of the screen. A touch of the Quit button gave me time-to-run to the destination and battery run time. Screen back light level can be graduated. When in the air you can zoom in or out to assist in track keeping. The handbook that comes with the 96C shows many more features that the unit can do. A track using a series of waypoints can be set up or the pilot can simply Go-to a selected waypoint. Up to 1000 user waypoints can be added. The memory can be updated via the supplied USB cable. The 96C does not come with a carry pouch so I obtained one.

Summary; The Garmin 96C is a compact easy to use portable aviation GPS. It is well priced and for the small cost difference the 96C (colour) model is probably a better unit than the 96 (mono). Please remember that a portable aviation GPS unit should only be used as an assist to the basic VFR skills of chart, watch & compass.

A happy Garmin 96C GPS owner.
